Swimming with whale sharks in the Yucatan
Isla Holbox Whale Shark season is from May 15 to September 15.
As divers, we have always I wanted to see a whale shark. After spending a week in Roatan, without even seeing a glimpse of one, we made it our mission to find and were pleased to learn that we could get lucky in Holbox Island. On a sunny day last September, we were in the coastal city of Chiquilá, parked the car and took a boat to Isla Holbox. Once there, we can easily find a fisherman with a boat "(a small wooden fishing boat with motor) that has used its GPS locator not so quaint to find the place where the whale shark, locally known as "Dominoes," feed the next day. After about one hour from the car, we are in the middle of the ocean view landless. Suddenly, there were four or five whale sharks swim slowly around us (and three boats that were there to observe). They were joined by a manta ray that was also great fishing in the area.
The whale shark is the biggest fish the world, usually between 15 and 50 feet (5-16 m) long and weigh 10 tons. These gentle creatures of the sea beach of all tropical waters and rarely venture in temperate zones.
The body of the whale shark is great, but simplified, like a shark. In fact, you probably got their name because they resemble a shark with a head of a whale. They are dark brown or gray with white or yellow, with white or yellow belly.
The whale shark is not has nothing in common with whales, except for its size and the fact that only eats plankton minutes picking up with his mouth open. Unlike most sharks, shark whale has its mouth at the front of his head, instead of at the bottom and, unlike other sharks, it does not eat meat. Normally it feeds on or just below the surface by suction, literally, food, water.
We know very little about the Whale shark reproduction, with most information from a single egg in the Gulf of Mexico. We believe that youth development in the case of eggs that are stored in the mother's body until they hatch. Despite their large adult size, whale sharks are very low at birth, probably 40-50 inches.
The whale shark is a docile fish that does not attack even on provocation. Despite their impressive appearance, are harmless to humans. They are mainly solitary in nature, who travel frequently and are often difficult to find. The issue of Isla Holbox is an exceptional adventure. Being in the presence of these large animals, with enough time to observe and appreciate, is a special privilege. Yes Please, watch, take photos, enjoy, but like most of the wonders of the ocean, please do not touch or harass in any way!
For several years, whale sharks have been coming to the northern tip of the Yucatan peninsula to feed and mate during the months of May through October. Based tourism whale sharks has increased significantly in recent years and government agencies have taken steps to protect these magnificent animals, so that species not be affected and will continue to return to this area.
For this reason, Isla Holbox has recently been appointed by the Mexican government as the only port that can offer trips to swim with whale sharks and there are strict rules against diving equipment that is used to visualize the area. Local guides are trained to give guided tours are also safe for the whale shark as they are for human visitors.
Ask around in the docks or in the center have someone drive you to the whale shark. The Hotel Faro Viejo, who was kind enough to give us the use of our cover photo, you can arrange a tour to see these magnificent creatures. Be prepared to spend five or six hours in the water, with all that entails. Most tourist guides are the drinks, but remember to ask before you leave. And do not forget a hat and sunscreen!

Getting to Holbox –
From Merida, you can take a bus that leaves at 11 pm and arrives to Chiquila at 5:00, where you take a ferry to the island. If you drive, it is best to take the free "(free) Merida-Cancun road at kilometer 80 of the Customs building in El Ideal, where you turn left to Chiquilá.
Ferry Crossings –
Holbox Chiquilá at 5 pm, 7 h, 9 h, 10 h, 11 h, 13 hours, 3 hours, 16 hours, 6 hours. ? From Chiquila to Holbox: 6 h, 8 h, 10 h, 11 h, 12 h, 2:00, 4:00, 7:00. The cost is 45 pesos per person. If you do not wait, you can rent a boat "one of the men waiting at the dock. It will cost approximately $ 240 pesos, but you may be able to share it with someone who is waiting.
